The USF Financial Brainstorming message board has been created in response to community suggestions that there be an open forum for exchange of ideas regarding ways that the University of San Francisco might respond to current economic situation. We invite all members of the University community, from faculty and staff to students, alumni, parents, and friends to contribute their thoughts and suggestions. UCLA is well known for its summer internship program that is heavily utilized by students from east coast schools who want to do an internship in the LA area. It is state law that for-profit companies must pay interns at least minimum wage UNLESS the student is receiving school credit. Many schools don't offer credit for internships yet many companies, famously the movie studios, don't pay interns. The "workaround" is that students can sign up for a summer "class" at UCLA where he/she receives credit for the internship.This creates a "win-win-win" loophole for the university, the student and the employer. The student can then transfer the credit back to his/her university much like a semester abroad or summer study program. Perhaps USF could start this type of program with a focus on students wanting to do summer internships in the bay area (most likely at tech/biotech companies). -Alex Hochman, Career Services x2437
As one of our naive optimists, it occurs to me that the
current economic downturn will, at some point ahead, be
over and done with, and the DOW will move upward again.
Some television pundits have even offered projections
as to when roughly this is likely to occur, based upon
accululated economic data from past recessions. Hence
it would seem that USF may have an opportunity right now
to lay the groundwork for a great leap forward, in terms
of the institution's endowment, by encouraging donors to
make special gifts at this time -- those who can afford
to do so -- which could get invested where future rises
in value are most likely. For example, an investment
of $1000 while the DJIA is below 9000 would increase in
value to more than $1500 by the time the DJIA is back
to its former all-time high of several weeks ago. Risky?
Well, it wouldn't be current funds that were put at risk,
but "special" gifts which wouldn't otherwise be in hand,
and which were being contributed with a donor's full
understanding that this was a "bet" on the future.
